A phobia is an overwhelming and unreasonable fear of an object or situation that poses little real danger. Unlike the brief anxiety most people feel when they give a speech or take a test, a phobia is long-lasting, causes intense physical and psychological reactions, and can affect your ability to function normally at work or in social settings.

Several types of phobias exist. Some people fear large, open spaces. Others are unable to tolerate certain social situations. And still others have a specific phobia, such as a fear of snakes, elevators or flying.

Not all phobias need treatment, but if a phobia affects your daily life, a number of therapies are available that can help you overcome your fears — often permanently.

Phobia

A phobia is a large often irrational fear that results in an individual going out of his or her way in order to avoid that thing, situation, or idea. In extreme cases, a phobia can lead to an anxiety disorder or impaired living. There are two main types of phobia, specific phobia and social phobia; in the case of a specific phobia the individual suffers from, “a marked and persistent fear of an object or situation which brings about an excessive or unreasonable fear when in the presence of, or anticipating, a specific object; the specific phobias may also include concerns with losing control, panicking, and fainting which is the direct result of an encounter with the phobia.” This is according to the American Psychiatric Society in 1994 in their book on diagnosing mental health problems. Social phobias, on the other hand suffer from, “fear of public situations and scrutiny which leads to embarrassment or humiliation in the diagnostic criteria. In social phobias, there is also a generalized category. Unlike specific phobias which may develop before the age of 10, social phobias are typically not present until pubertal transition.”

With these phobias, the living quality of a person is often changed, therefore the artist believes that a successful idea would be to create several (3) pieces in which the quality of an individual’s life decreases over time through increasing phobias.
